NextGen Aviation?

The NextGen program is in charge of the development and utilization of a device known throughout the industry as ADS-B or the Automated Dependent Surveillance Broadcast. This system relies on satellite provided location that would in theory provide "more precise situational awareness" by replacing conventional radar systems out today. Anne Wainscott-Sargent stated in Aviation Today,

"In the United States, the FAA has invested in hundreds of ground-based ADS-B systems and has mandated that qualifying aircraft flying over U.S. airspace be ADS-B-equipped by January 2020. Two Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite operators are vying for leadership in the space-based ADS-B market in the United States."

One huge issue that they face is cost. The endeavor is costing the taxpayers millions every fiscal year like in 2015 when they spent just over $10 million. The hope for the future is that these costs will be drastically reduced and allow for a more seamless navigational system for general aviation.
